Hi, I am Shelley and I blog as the Carpenters Daughter who quilts. I am hosting Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday. My project this week was to finish the flimsy that was my oldest WIP. I made an I Spy quilt using Jeni Baker’s Patchwork Chevron quilt recipe from Moda Bake Shop. I started piecing the blocks on Super Bowl Sunday in 2012.
It is 78 inches square so it completely covers the top of our king size bed. I collected I Spy charm squares from sellers on Etsy and Ebay. I had over 200 charms and eliminated squares that didn’t have that much of a design centered on them or I wasn’t sure a kid would understand what it was depicting. There are a couple duplicates with there being over 150 different charms.
Here is some close ups of the fun prints.
I love the turkey print. There is something that should appeal to both boys and girls in this quilt. I am planning on offering it up for sale after it’s completed. I plan to make up some I Spy items lists so the kids can play the game and locate all the items.
I am currently working on quilting this quilt. I hope to at all possible have it completed by the end of this linky party and will link up my finish, if completed on time.
I did complete quilting two quilts that were tops from last year. They have their own blog post.
Jelly Roll Slice
Katie’s Compass which was created from leftover strips from the Jelly Roll Slice.
I decided to take a week off from working on my memory quilt projects. I need to make some room to be able to start quilting on them. I am up to 9 quilt tops from Dad’s shirts.
Let’s start this week’s linky party. Please link up your week’s finished projects and be sure to go check out as many of the other linky partiers as you can.
Hi, I am hosting Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday again this week. I have been busy working on quilting and finishing some of my oldest works in progresses. I look forward to sharing them with you all. It was great fun to see everyone’s latest projects when I hosted 2 weeks ago. I hope to see more this week.
Hi, I am Shelley who blogs as The Carpenters Daughter Who Quilts and I am hosting this week’s TGIFF:Thank God It’s Finished Friday. I have been busy since December creating memory quilts from my Father inlaw’s plaid shirts for as much of our family that I can from 30 shirts. I am now up to 7 quilt tops with plans for maybe a total of 11 quilts before I am down to just cuffs, pockets and collars.
I have become a bit obsessed with Swoon quilts. I have just finished my fourth one (tops that still need quilting) in about 2.5 months. I have been sharing on Instagram with the quilt alongs that you can find under the #swoonqal and #swoonqal2017. I am a bit late to the game with making my first Swoon. I have had pattern for years so why not use stashed fabrics from 2010 to start my first one.
I shared photos of different Swoon quilts with my three sisters inlaws that I needed to make memory quilts for yet. And one decided on the original 24 inch block version and the other two decided they both wanted the scrappy patchwork Swoons.
This quilt top has to be one of my favorite to date. It is going to be so hard to turn over to my husband’s sister when completed.
I did write an entire separate blog post on these two Swoon quilts and can be found here.
This is the first scrappy patchwork Swoon that I created. It uses all 30 of Dad’s shirts.
This is the second scrappy patchwork Swoon that I made from Dad’s shirts. The navy isn’t as dark in person.
I have written an entire blog post about the two Patchwork Swoon quilt tops and it can be found here.
This is a quick peek at the other memory quilts that I have completed since December. They can be found on my blog.
How about we start this Friday’s party?? I look forward to seeing what everyone else has been working on lately. Please link up your finishes below and be kind and visit as many of your fellow linky party participants’ pages and share the comment love.
Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hi,
I am hosting this week’s TGIFF: Thank God It’s Finished Friday. My post and the linky party linkup information will go live this evening. I have multiple pretties to share this week. I look forward to seeing what everyone else has to share.
Hi, This week is my turn to host TGIFF (Thank God It’s Finished Friday) linky party. It is also my birthday weekend, with my actual birthday being on Sunday. I hosted TGIFF last year on my birthday. I look forward to seeing what you all have accomplished lately quilting and sewing wise.
I have been off grid the last month as my desktop computer (my lifeline) was struck by lightning. The motherboard was fried. We did have insurance and I was able to get a different computer. Unfortunately, I lost pretty much all my quilt patterns and photos. This has been a very big blow since we lost personal photos of Mom who passed 3 years ago and my Father inlaw who just passed away 6 months ago.
I didn’t have a true inventory of all of my quilt patterns that were stored on there. It has been stomach wretching to look at all the quilt photos on my Pinterest and find yet another pattern I lost. I was able to retrieve quite a few that had been purchased off of Etsy and Craftsy. I use Gmail and thankfully it is web based so it can be accessed from anywhere, so old emails turned up download links that still worked so I could re-upload my purchased patterns. I lost half off all my May is for Maker’s pattern purchases. I hadn’t printed out very many patterns in recent years, choosing to work off the computer screen. A couple of my quilting designer friends have generously helped me replace my most recent pattern purchases from them. All retrieved and future patterns are being saved in three different (2 cloud/web based) ways and also soon printed out making a hard copy. Adobe Acrobat Reader DC has an option creating a password and you can save your pdf files to the Cloud. Backup your files. This ends my public service announcement.
I am currently working on making a queen size quilt top from Diary of a Quilter Amy Smart’s latest pattern called Watchtower. I am making a scrappy patriotic version. Because my gold solid was a tad short of the required amount, I am resizing the queen which finishes around 86 by 104″ to be 86″ square or instead of making 20 blocks, I will have 16. I love big blocks. These finish at 19 inches.
I hope to have a completed flimsy to show you before Friday is over.(There were 192 HST).I apologize for being late in getting the linky party linkup up running and live. We have a family wedding on Saturday, which wasn’t in the works yet when I first signed up to host.
My last big quilt project before the lightning problem was making a quilt from the block I designed for the 2016 Cloud 9 Fabrics New Block BlogHop. My block was called Harvest Berry Baskets. I came up with many ways to layout the blocks and the one I decided on has now been renamed in quilt form as”Lightning Striked“. My quilting blogger friend Sandra from Musings of a Menopausal Melon suggested Lightning as a name.
(Well, Friday is now over and I didn’t get all my blocks pieced together to make my top. I have been up 2 nights in a row til 2 sewing and I am pretty tired now. I have to shorten a bridesmaid dress yet before bed, as the girls have an early morning appointment for hair and makeup. My plans for the upcoming week is to be able to come back here on Friday and show you my finished Watchtower flimsy and hopefully have the Lightning Striked top quilted and bound. )
It’s time to link up your Friday Finishes. Please visit as many of your other linky party neighbors as you can and share your support. Everyone loves comments! Thank you for hanging out with me on my birthday. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
(Thanks to everyone for the early birthday wishes. Lots of great quilty projects to check out this week. I will be visiting everyone later this weekend and get comments posted on Monday. Family wedding and birthday plans the rest of weekend.)
Welcome to TGIFF! Hi my name is Shelley and I blog as The Carpenters Daughter who Quilts. I have been quilting for over 20 years and blogging for almost 2 years. I think this is my third time hosting the Thank Goodness It’s Finished Friday linky party. I am excited to see everyone’s latest finish and the chance to meet some new to me quilt bloggers.
I am sharing my latest quilt top finish. It is Go West by Bonjour Quilts. I have a twin size top finished but I am currently putting together a second twin top to join together to make a king size quilt. I really really love this quilt pattern and design. It is also one that my daughter likes as well so I have one cut out for her too. We have the fabric cut out to supersize her quilt too.
I am thinking of adding to the length of the quilt. A twin size is 64 by 84 inches. If you are putting two tops together, you will essentially come up with a top that is 128 inches wide by the 84 inches long. Our king mattress and box springs is currently on the floor. We are looking to build our own platform bed with a headboard attached to the wall. I measured the bed as is and I would really like in the 95 inch or so length at least. I am looking at adding an additional top and bottom two rows to the design but that would take the top to 104 inches long. I guess I could just add the additional two rows to the bottom and it would be approximately 96 inches. I really do not need 128 inches across so will just have to play with layout to see what looks right.
This is my late night finish of the top last night. I snapped a quick photo of it thrown across the couch and uploaded to Instagram. As the photo loaded, I saw that I had a big mistake of two rows flipped. Luckily it was easy to open a couple seams and take out the two row and flip them and sew back in. Bright blue always touches bright blue.
Here is the corrected version.
It really is hard to get a full on photo of a quilt on the king size bed since our closet is so close to the foot of the bed.
These are the fabrics that my daughter chose for her Go West quilt.
This is Lyric, our Australian Shepherd that we adopted in February. She was a kenneled breeder dog. Her owner died and I am not sure what her life was truely like there. After 4 months, she still will not allow my husband to touch her. She will take food from his hand but that is all. She likes to hang out in the closet in our bedroom. She was lurking in the closet when I was taking photos. She used to get on the bed with me but now she prefers making a nest in the closet. It has to be hot in there as she is panting.
Thanks for stopping by my blog and checking out my Friday finish (that is still a WIP.) I hope to be back with a possible photo of a finished king top or more progress.
It is now time for all of you to link up your Friday Finishes. Please go check out as many of the other quilters’ blogs and share the love by leaving a comment.( My comment page can be found if you click on the the title of this blog post and open the actual blog post.)
Hi, I am excited to share that I have my Zen Gardens Bento Box quilt completely quilted and bound. I really like how it turned out. I won the set of jelly roll strips back in December from the Sew Mama Sew Giveaway Day in a package of fabric with a solids charm pack and three mini charm packs. I loved the bold graphics of the black and white prints and the red certainly adds lots of interest to the mix, but I was just not sure to do with them and they sat for months in my stash.
Zen Gardens Bento Box Quilt Completed, Quilted and Bound
I really love the red binding as it pulls it all together. I would like to thank my friend Cheryl @ Meadow Mist Designs for suggesting adding the gray solid. Gray has become one of my favorite go to colors and I need to restock as I am down to less than a yard.
Plus and Dash pieced back to Zen Gardens Bento Box
As much as I love the actual front to the Bento Box quilt, I almost love the back more. I love all plus and cross quilt block designs. This particular plus block is one of my favorites and I have numerous pins on my Pinterest boards of quilts made with this block. It started as fly by the seat of your pants kind of idea to possibly use miscut fabric from my mystery quiltalong project. I actually used the leftover fabric and cut the plus and dash blocks and the binding from that instead. I will be using my miscut squares in a new plus quilt project since they were the perfect size. I would like to thank my quilting friend Sandra @ Musings of a Menopausal Melon for helping me to decide on whether to add the dash to my plus blocks I had made up.
Front and Back together
I think the two sides would make a cool quilt together??
Zen Gardens Bento Box back on the bed after quilting
I quilted in a mock plaid or argyle pattern with double rows in the center of each block and where each block joined the next. I almost did not follow through with adding the diagonal center quilting as it looked good with out it. I am glad I did finish it as I planned as it makes a really cool design. I had to fill 21 bobbins to get all the stitching completed.
Full back of Zen Gardens Bento Box
I love the red, white and black paisley print I found at Walmart. I have a small portion left that will be cut into 3.5 inch squares to go into my black and white prints with red solid plus quilt project. I saved the extra black solid from cutting down the quilt backing after quilting and it will yield a few squares for the plus project as well.
Closeup of mock plaid quilting
Smokey, my cat helped hold down this quilt top this week every chance he could get. It did not mattern how many safety pins he was laying on.
Smokey does not mind the safety pins
Ugh, looks like a new project…need to reupholster my Mom’s sewing chair. I do have vinyl upholstery and foam cushions in my stash of supplies. I need to decide on whether to make my own vinyl piping to add back to the chair.
No Pins is more comfortable
I always try to wash my finished quilts before they are presented. This way I can determine how well they are going to hold up. There usually is alot of praying involved, especially when combining white and red together or other dark colors. I have had trouble with bright blue doing more bleeding of color than red like in my Dr. Seuss quilt. I live with two cats and two dogs so there can be lots of shedding of hair, and not everyone loves them as much as we do. Smokey did shed on to the black backing and I somehow picked up some dirt from my outdoor bench onto one of my white blocks. So into the wash it went.
A Quilter’s Life saving Trick
I decided to throw 3 color catchers in to the wash with the quilt. This is the end result. No red transfer to any of the white fabrics that I could see. I actually think this is color bleed from the black fabric. I got this result when I washed other very black based quilts.
Washed and Ready to Go.
Here is my quilt all washed and ready to go. It ended up finishing up at 82 inches square. It started out at 86 inches square. I really like how it turned out using a cotton bedsheet as the batting. I am now looking for a California King white sheet so maybe I can use that in my Charming quilt that is 105 inches square. After making the plus and dash block design for this quilt backing, I am thinking it would be awesome to use it over in the back for Charming. I have a lovely black and white French text print and turquoise solid that could have black pluses added to it fairly easy.
One Last Peek
Thank you for stopping by and checking out my quilts. I have heard that some of you have had trouble leaving comments. I am not sure why or what is happened to the comments. If you click on the blog post title and open it up, that is where the comments show. You did not have to use to do it that way. Comments are open. I do appreciate all comments and do my best to get personal responses back to all.
I will be linking up this quilt finish with the various mid week linky parties that you can find the live links to in my Linky Party tab at top of the blog.
