  • Candy Scraps Part Deux: Dad’s Plaid Shirts Memory Quilt

Hi, I have another memory quilt top finished. This one was made from Moda Bake Shop’s Candy Scraps quilt tutorial by Corey Yoder. I have made this quilt before and used it to create a graduation gift quilt in Iowa State University colors for our niece.

This is the start of my paper piecing the blocks. I enlarged the design from 64 blocks  to 80 blocks. When  I made the graduation quilt, somehow I managed to paperpiece and get the quilt completely quilted and bound in 12 days. It took longer to make this top but I guess I didn’t devote my entire free time to making it. I was working on the City Tiles at same time.

Here are the first16 blocks and they show how the  design will shape up. The navy is quite dark and is difficult to photograph.

This was 20 blocks together. Ugh, only a fourth of the way there. Ha.

Here are all 10 rows of 8 blocks layed out on the bed. The last row was too much for the length and wanted to fall out of the photo.

Hip Hip Hooray! Yeah!! We have a completed flimsy. It finishes 64 by 80. Some of the rows fought me with the stretchiness of the plaids. The first quilt didn’t fight me like this one did. It took lots of pins to make sure rows stayed aligned. This quilt is going to go to my husband. I intended to give him the My Guy quilt but we have decided to gift that one to Dad’s best friend from college. I guess the hardest one to finish should stay in the family. I thought we were going to  see Dad’s friend last weekend and hoped or intended to have this quilted for him as we don’t see him often. It took me way longer than I thought to finish quilting my Tribal Plus quilt and I pieced a striped backing for the My Guy quilt. During a comedy of errors, it took me 4 times to get that pieced back basted to the My Guy quilt. I have learned how to use that Kwik Klip thing to help you open and close safety pins. Why it has taken me years to own one? My Guy quilt is basted and next in line for quilting and City Tiles will be basting soon after.

Thank you for stopping by my blog. I will be linking this finish up with Crazy Mom Quilts linky party.

    Happy Sewing,

    Shelley

  • My Sometime Soon Saturday WIP Projects

Hi, There is Throwback Thursday, Flash Back Friday or Finish It Up Friday and today I am starting Sometime Soon Saturday for my WIP projects. I hope to have these finished sometime real soon.

I have worked a little bit on my Single Wedding Ring blocks made from Fat Quarter Shop’s tutorial . I enlarged my squares that were cut to make the half square triangles from their 3 3/8 inches to 3 1/2 inches. It is just easier to cut 3 1/2 squares. I drew my line diagonally with a pencil and stitched on either side with what should be a scant 1/4 inch and did not have much trimming to do to square up my HSTs.

I have gone back and forth on whether I liked the colors or if I want to continue. As I put more of the blocks together, I am liking the soft colors and vintage feel of the design.

Now for the sometime soon finishes that are works in progresses, I have pulled out my 39 Shades of Charming king size quilt top that is made from Meadow Mist Design’s Charming quilt pattern and previously blogged here. I am working on piecing a back for it. I need at least 108 inches square.

The previous blogged photos of this quilt were shown on our then full size poster bed. 105 inches square does fit the king size bed better. I kind of wish it was a bit shorter. I guess I could tuck it under the pillows like a bedspread in the future? I am sure it will shrink up some after quilting and washing and drying so it may eliminate the length problem all together.

    Backing and Binding Fabrics

The teal/turquoise solid shows up lighter here than it actually is. It is a tad darker shade than the main quilt. The other teal mottled print will be the binding. I have over 4 yards of the black French text print and 3 yards of the teal solid. I need to design at least a 108 inch square backing.

My plus blocks finish out at 11 3/4 inches. I am looking at having 8-9 plus blocks in a row depending on what I add for sashing. I do not have much black solid left. I am thinking 5 teal background blocks and 4 black background blocks in a row. I am still working out how to use the over 4 yards of French text. The text will run in wrong direction if I run it in one length across the quilt. I can run it the length of quilt. Either way I have a swatch 44 inches by 108 inches. I just need to decide what to do with the plus blocks and how to set them in quilt design.

I hope everyone has a good weekend. It has been a rough week here. A friend of our family passed away in her sleep at only 48 years old. The family is still waiting to hear what her actual cause of death was. Most of the state of Iowa got hit by some very heavy rains yesterday. We received between 3-4 inches of rain and some areas had upwards of 9 inches of rain in one day. All that rain certainly added to the somber mood at the cemetery.

I am off to work on designing my quilt block tutorial for the Fabri-Quilt Block Hop that I am supposed to be participating in on September 1st. I lost two weeks to working on all our household projects and now this past week could not be helped as we spent quality time with our friends and their family. They gave me a lot of support when my Mom passed away. This is supposed to be a fun project but I am struggling and drawing a blank as what to create. I have found the graph paper and sharpened up my colored pencils that match my colored fabrics. Wish me luck! See you again in a couple days with my results.

    Happy Sewing,

  • #TBT Candy Scraps Paper Pieced Quilt

I thought I would share one of my recent quilt finishes as a Throwback Thursday blog post.

I made the Candy Scraps paper pieced quilt for a graduation gift for our niece. I used the Moda Bake Shop tutorial by Corey Yoder.

I started with 320 little 2.5 inch squares in 18 different shades of red and yellow, that I cut from fat quarters I purchased from JoAnn Fabrics. They were sewn into 160 pairs, paper pieced onto gray lattice strips, added 160 triangles to making 80- 8.5 inch squares. I spent 2 hours just weeding off the 400 strips of paper from the backs of the quilt blocks.

I thought for some reason I had 3 weeks to complete this project, guess I read the calendar wrong as when I started only had 12 days. I got it completed on time, with the help of last 3 nights up to 2 AM sewing. I have not paper pieced a quilt in like 10 years. Oh, this will be easier than strip piecing since I am only having to create one block. Yeah, right. The original quilt pattern only made 48 blocks for a small throw size quilt. Thankfully I can do Math and was able to make it the size I wanted and it actually worked out. I really like how nicely the reds and yellows went together with the gray. I think the red and yellow quilt was well received, especially since our niece is enrolled this fall at Iowa State University.
